It Never Fails.......

http://www.strangegirl.com/austenquiz/

No matter how many times I take a Jane Austen character quiz or how many different quizzes I take, the result is the same: Marianne Dashwood. Not that I'm complaining -- Marianne is actually my favorite Austen character -- I just think it's funny. I think I am a lot more practical than Marianne is. But, since every single time I take an Austen quiz the result says that I am Marianne, it must somewhat accurate. :)

Christmas Crafts and Lists

This week, I finally opened one of my Christmas presents from last year. Of course, I unwrapped it on Christmas day with my other presents, but I haven't opened it to use it since then. It's been lying on a shelf in my closet waiting for me to take it out of the package. With this Christmas approaching I decided that I needed to get to work if I wanted to hang them on the tree this year. Here they are: http://www.michellesneedlecrafts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=6519

Every year I ask for a new cross-stitch sampler for Christmas, but last year I asked for a sampler and the ornament kit. I thought these ornaments were sooo cute. Now I have to finish all six in time to use them. I'm also trying to decide which sampler to ask for this year. There are so many beautiful scenes to choose from. I think I might go with either this one http://www.michellesneedlecrafts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=7044 or
http://www.michellesneedlecrafts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=6582.

We have been out Christmas shopping twice already. Once was for my dad. We picked out a couple of dress shirts and ties for him. The second time was yesterday, when my mom wanted my sister and I to try to pick out some clothes for ourselves, but I couldn't find anything. I have my shopping list made up this year (for once), so when Gabrielle and I go out on our annual all-day shopping adventure after Thanksgiving, I will actually know what I want to buy and which stores I need to go to. Last year was such a nightmare. The traffic was so heavy it took 45 minutes for me to drive just from the stoplight in front of the mall, through the parking lot, and find a parking space. That's not even counting the rest of the time we spent driving. Then, when we got inside the mall, neither one of us could decide what we wanted to buy our parents, so we spent hours going through every store in the mall trying to make a decision. After that, I promised myself I would be better organized this year and so far, I've succeeded. The only problem is, if we get to the mall, and they have sold out of the gifts we're planning to buy, we are going to be in the same predicament we were last year. I really hope that is not going to be the case!

Rambling Thoughts

I'm a little stressed in the last attempts to get all my artwork ready for the art show two weeks from now. I have drawn eleven new pieces this year, most of them in the last three months. The newer pieces all need touching up so I work on them in my spare time. I'm also trying different frames and mat boards on all of them constantly to see which looks the best.

One of my new projects is a website. I finally found a place online that hosts websites for free, so I have been working for over a week to put one together for my artwork. On one hand, it's fairly easy, because all I have to do is choose a template and upload photos to my site, but on the other hand, it's a LOT of work and very time-consuming. I have most of the main photos in place now, so I think I should have it finished in a few days.

I tried to bake bread from scratch this morning. My mom brought out her bread machine this weekend and made a few loaves in it, so I thought I would try a recipe for whole wheat bread. I used Martha Stewart's recipe. It needed quite a few ingredients, but I got everything ready and attempted it this morning. I made the dough and set it to rise. When I took it out to knead it, I realized I had mixed up the kneading instructions and done the "rising" and "kneading" in the wrong order, but I repaired the mistake as best I could and put the two loaves in the oven. When I finally took them out, they looked okay, but somehow, not quite right. It wasn't until I waited for them to cool, cut myself a slice, and tasted it that I realized my mistake -- I had been so busy measuring three kinds of flour that I forgot the salt! Oh, well. If I put a lot of peanut butter on it I probably won't notice how tasteless it is.

Brownies From A Box

Yesterday, I made some brownies from a box mix. I bake lots of things from scratch, cookies in particular, but now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever made brownies from scratch. I'll have to try it sometime and see which I prefer. I actually like blueberry muffins from a box mix better than home-made. The mix is just lighter and fluffier, in my opinion. :)

Anyway, here's step 1: Stirring the dry mix, oil, water, and eggs together. This step is also a reminder that even box mixes can be messed up. Once when I made brownies, I didn't notice that it clearly says "stir 50 times" and used a hand mixer. Big mistake! Those brownies turned out so tough that they could have been used as a substitute for rubber. Now, I stir, no matter how long it takes to get all that dry mix incorporated.
Step 2: spread evenly in pan. Finished brownies! Always wait for brownies to cool completely before you take them out of the pan, because they will crumble. These brownies turned out pretty good. They were a dark chocolate flavor, which I really liked, only next time I think I'll make them "cake-like" instead of "fudge-like" so they will be just a little fluffier.

A Little More Busy A Little Less Busy

I haven't posted here the way I've wanted to in the last week. I keep coming up with ideas for things I'd like to post about and then I run out of time. The reason is that I'm trying to put together a small website with all my artwork on it. I finally found a place that hosts websites for free, so I immediately signed up and have been uploading pictures and reworking page templates ever since. It's very time consuming!! I'm almost finished now, so I hope I'll be able to go back to more regular posting soon.

On the other hand, the amount of artwork I have to do has tapered off a lot now. I finished three drawings and decided not to bother with the other two. One picture wasn't as clear as I was hoping and I would have had to get my cousin to take the other picture and email it to me, so I just decided I had done enough. I'm only working on one landscape now, a little at a time. If I get it done before the art show, that's fine, but if I don't, that's fine, too. I already have about ten drawings that I could enter, but I may only enter four. I haven't decided yet. I'm trying to decide what direction I want to take with my art after the show. I really want to learn to paint, so I'm thinking about taking a break from drawing lessons and finding either an oil or watercolor teacher. It's something to consider anyway.

October Weather

O sun and skies and clouds of June,
and flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October's bright blue weather
When loud the humblebee makes haste,
Belated, thriftless vagrant,
And Golden Rod is dying fast,
And lanes with grapes are fragrant.
When on the ground red apples lie
In pile like jewels shining,
And redder still on old stone walls
Are leaves of woodbine twining.
When springs run low, and on the brooks,
In idle golden freighting,
Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush
Of woods, for winter waiting.
Helen Hunt Jackson
Most of our October days have been like this, but not today. The rain has poured all day long. Considering that this state has been in a drought all summer, everyone is grateful for the rain and hope for more. Most like October, though, the leaves are finally changing into brilliant colors!

A Quilt With A Looong Story

I began this quilt last year, May of last year to be exact. It began with a large stack of scraps I had left over from other quilt projects that I had to use up. I decided to make a double wedding ring pattern with them. That was the first decision. Then I began searching online to get ideas for color schemes. My very favorite palette is blue-and-white, but I had so many beautiful materials I wanted to use that I decided I would incorporate lots of different colors. The problem was to do this neatly, in such a way that all the fabrics would work well together. I came across a quilt online that used the wedding ring like a color prism. Their colors were much more vibrant than mine, but they gave me the basis for my idea. I would use blue, pink, green, and yellow like a prism, with my favorite colors, pink and blue, as the primary colors.
I had a lot of blue, and green fabrics to work with, but I had to buy a few extra yellows and pinks to complete the necessary number of sections. I also decided I wanted to make smaller rings than most double wedding ring patterns call for. I pieced all the rings together completely by hand in just a few months, then stitched the rings onto the white border. Now it was time for the big decision -- how to quilt it. I had made three full-sized and two small quilts before, but I hadn't done complicated quilting on any of them. I searched dozens of books at library before I came up with my final plan: intricate heart in the center of the rings, cross-hatching on the white border, a single row of hearts on the blue border, and simple zig-zagging on the outside white border. I did get side tracked for a few weeks considering the idea of an appliqued border, but gave that up finally as just too complicated.
I began the quilting process. All the quilting was done by hand. Some books recommended pencil instead of disappearing ink for marking quilt designs, but that would have made washing necessary once the quilt was complete. I just couldn't take the idea of washing it and possibly ruining seams that I had worked so hard on, so I used a disappearing ink quilter's marking pen and saturated each place with water as I completed it. I did have trouble getting the ink to disappear a few times and almost had a panic attack, but if I let the marks soak in enough cold water or used ice, they eventually came off.
Here you see the finished project, completed this May almost exactly a year after I began it. I did cheat and attached all those long borders by machine; otherwise I can say the quilt is completely handmade. What did I learn from this experience? A lot about quilting, but most importantly, I WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING THIS COMPLICATED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

22 Birthday

Well, my birthday is over already. What's funny, is that when I was little, it seemed like forever before my birthday came around every year. I would always say it took my birthday longer to get here than everybody else's because mine was in fall. All my friends and cousins' birthdays were in summer, so I had to go to all of their parties and then wait another two months for my birthday. It just did not seem like it took the same 365 days to get to my birthday that it did to theirs -- it felt like theirs came every 100 days or so. That's not true any more! It seems like October comes sooner every year.

Yesterday morning, we went shopping for new clothes. I chose a dressier outfit at one store -- black pants and a satin shirt with a burgundy and black print. I also finally found a really colorful dress. It's bright pink and purple with really big bold patterns and flowing sleeves. I like dresses and shirts with bold prints on them. One day, I'll probably look back and wonder what I was thinking, but for now I really like them. At another store I found a nice pair of jeans and two simple tops in bright fuchsia and blue. I love bright colors. When we got home, my mom made one of my favorite desserts for after dinner, a rich chocolate eclair, and then we went out to eat at a great Mexican restaurant. I love all kinds of cuisine, but Mexican is my absolute favorite. Everything is delicious at this restaurant. Even the chips-n-salsa appetizer is great. I ordered an enchilada combo plate and it was sooo good. When we went home, I opened a couple more presents. Gabrielle gave me a DVD of one of my favorite musicals, My Fair Lady, and my mom gave me a little crystal piano figurine that was so pretty.

So, you can see, I had a really great birthday. By the way, I tried to post pictures, but blogger's picture thing isn't working today for some reason. :)

Happy Birthday To Me!

I'm 22 years old today! We're going to go shopping this afternoon and out to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants. I'll write more when we get back. :)

Writing Tips from Boundless

http://www.boundlessline.org/2007/10/so-you-want-to-.html

I thought this was a pretty interesting blog entry called "So You Want To Be A Writer". It gives a lot of tips about writing everything from articles to novels. There are even some good thoughts in the comments section and a link to another article about writing well.

Scrapbooking Again

I've decided to try to finish my scrapbook. I started it three years ago, worked on it for a while, and then gave up on it. It's totally unlike me to give up on a project, but I gave up on that one. I didn't know exactly how to construct scrapbook pages, which was completely frustrating, and all the how-to books were waaaay too complicated with die-cuts, rubber stamps, pop-up pages, origami, embossing tools, and transferring images from photos to paper. Their pages looked really cool, but I didn't want to put that kind of time and money into a scrapbook page. I still made about five pages using my own ideas, but it was so much trouble to search through all of my mom's photo albums to find old pictures, make copies of them, buy papers and stickers that coordinated with both pictures and album and put them altogether that I finally just quit. I still kept saving lots of little things in case I ever finished my scrapbook and I took them out last week to look at them. I have lots of programs, invitations, and pictures from my high school graduation that I would love to use and I've collected all kinds of things from the tennis tournament we go to every year that would make a great page. I also discovered that I copied lots of pictures that I never used and besides that I now have lots of digital prints to work with. So I decided to get my scrapbook back out and start making plans. Most of my pages with family pictures are finished, but I want to make pages for my graduation, tennis tournaments, piano music, and artwork. The great thing is that I already have most of what I need. All I have to do is buy few new supplies before I can get started. My birthday is Friday, so I told my mom I wanted to pick out the other things I need from the arts and crafts store for part of my present. I love having something new to work on, even if it is just finishing an old project.

Hike to the Natural Bridge, Part 4

This is me just before the bridge.
And here is me and Gabrielle on top of the bridge. After we had stayed up there a little while, we started back down to find my mom. We really expected to find her waiting on a bench about halfway down because she has never climbed all the way to the top before. She's been close, but has always stopped just short of the top. On our way back down, we met her in almost the same place where I'd met my dad and sister before and she said she was going to the top this time. So, we turned around and climbed that same tenth of a mile again.
We decided to take the original trail back down. That involves going through this tiny space in between two rock walls. Not great if you're afraid of small spaces. I think it's kind of fun.
I was really hoping I could get a good picture of the bridge at a distance. I was able to one year, but that was before I had a digital camera so the picture is not the greatest. This shot was the best I could do. I think the trees have grown up so much around it that it couldn't be seen clearly in the distance like before.
This is the way back down. Again, I was by myself. I quickly remembered that the original trail has problems, too. The new trail has lots (and lots) of really steep stairs -- not fun going up. The old trail has very few steps, but it's really steep -- not fun going down. You have to pretty much brace your feet and slide down the mountain. Last time I jogged all the way down just to keep from sliding. This time I just walked fast and slid. : )
Anyway, the hike ws a lot of fun. The sign on the way out said the trail we took up was 3/4 mile long. It sure felt a lot longer. I guess that's because of all the steps. It also made me wonder how I did the waterfall hike with church last year. I know I remember that the sign said three miles. Whether it was three miles to the bottom of the waterfall and then the same back up or three miles altogether, I don't know. But, if the weather is good and I can get a lot of great pictures, I don't really mind how long the hike is.... I think.

Hike to the Natural Bridge, Part 3

Sunlight at last! My camera couldn't capture the beautiful panoramic view of the mountains I had here, especially because the closet trees were always in the way of my lens. I was really feeling lost now, though, because I knew I'd never seen a view like that until I got to the top before.

Here I'm walking beside the rocky mountain face. Just past this, I finally ran into my dad and sister coming back down. They were as confused as I was because nothing looked familiar. Two people had just passed us and overheard what we were saying. They told us that we were on the right trail and to just keep going about another tenth of mile to reach the bridge. Another tenth of a mile? That's just what I wanted to hear. Here's my dad and Gabrielle climbing some really rocky steps just before we reach the bridge. After that top step, we walked straight out onto it and realized we weren't on the wrong trail -- just an entirely different one than we had taken before. Usually, we take the original trail, which goes straight under the bridge, around, and then onto it. Somehow, we had taken a newer trail that led way out to the side of the bridge and then directly out onto it.
Our view from the top.
Looking over the side (as close as I get!).

Hike to the Natural Bridge, Part 2

It didn't take long before I was hiking by myself. My mom told me not to wait for her because she might just sit down for a while on one of the benches along the way and my dad and sister got way ahead of me. They didn't want to stop and wait for photographs. : ) I really loved all the staircases like this one. They were little, narrow stone steps and covered with slippery leaves. That's not even mentioning how steep they were.
The picture doesn't so this justice. I was walking beside this tall mountainside and came to this place where it hollows out deep and narrow inside into a cave.
Just past the cave were huge boulders.
More steps. It was really, really dark in these areas because the thick tree coverage blocked out most of the sunlight. I was also beginning to wonder to myself if I'd take the wrong turn somewhere. Nothing looked familiar and I didn't remember all these stairs. There weren't any little gazebos along the way to stop and rest in like I was sure I remembered before, and most incredible, there were hardly any people. Usually it's so crowded that you pass people constantly. I hadn't passed more than ten people.
This was like walking through the jungle. I was really beginning to think I'd turned the wrong way and ended up on one of the other hiking trails. I kept looking up and around me for the bridge, because, after so much walking, I thought I should be able to see it through the trees. Couldn't see it or anything familiar.

Hike to the Natural Bridge, Part 1

Yesterday, we drove to the mountains and hiked up a trail to the natural bridge. The leaves haven't changed colors completely yet, but the weather was perfect -- just a little cool with warm sunlight. When we first arrived at the park, I saw this pretty creek with all the trees reflected in it and had to get a few pictures.
A little bridge goes across the creek. It really wobbles when you try to cross it!
We've hiked this trail a few times before, but it's been two years since the last time we were here.
This is the first set of stairs in a very long series as we start on our way to the bridge!

Food Fun

Here's a fun little game different bloggers have been sending to each other this week. You're supposed to take each letter of your name and write a food related factoid that starts with that letter. Let's see:

M -- I don't really care for macaroni and cheese. I know everybody is supposed to love it, but I just never have. Sometimes my mom makes baked mac and cheese and I like that pretty well, but I just don't like the regular cheesy stuff.

A -- I love apple pie. It's one of my favorite types of pie. I want to find a recipe and try to make one for Christmas this year.

N -- Nachos are great. Mexican food is my favorite, anyway.

D -- Dr. Pepper is the best soft drink ever. Does that count as food? I think so.

Y -- Yogurt has never been my favorite thing. You know, the kind in the little containers at the grocery store? The only way I like it is with granola and fruit. I do like frozen yogurt pretty well, but I prefer ice cream. :)

I had some tough letters in my name! How many types of food can you think of that start with "Y" or "D"?

More Drawing

Here's a picture of my finished pirate ship. I've been wanting to draw a picture of a ship for a long time (years) but I haven't been able to find any reference photos that weren't copyrighted. One of my friends at church got married this summer and went to Aruba on her honeymoon. While they were there, she saw this ship sailing on the ocean and took pictures of it! Isn't that neat? I was so glad she let me copy the picture to draw. The rocky background is something I put in myself. I wanted to add something in the distance to break up the monotony of the water, so I looked up pictures of cliffs online to get a general idea for these. I still need to work on them a little more, put in more shadows, etc.

I have so much drawing to do. I'm working on three pictures now and I work on them every spare minute - even while I watch television - so I can finish them and have plenty of time to work on all the smaller details before the art show. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with all that I have left to do, so I'm really pushing myself hard to keep working at a steady pace. I hope that by my next art lesson ( two weeks from now) I will have made a lot of progress on those pieces.

New Music and Christmas Decorations

My new music book finally came in this week. It's a book of hymn arrangements. I had never played anything by this composer before, so I was a little worried that I wouldn't like his style of arranging, but as I've played through the melodies of the different hymns in the book, I'm very happy with it. Just as I hoped, the arrangements are pretty, but not so difficult that they bother the carpal tunnel syndrome in my left hand. I've decided to start working on "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" so that I can possibly have it ready by Thanksgiving. It has been two years since the problem with my hands caused me to stop playing the piano and I have only played a little off and on all this time. I have really missed being able to play! I hope that my left hand will get stronger as I continue to practice and that I'll be able to play classical music and difficult hymns arrangements again.
Can you believe there are already Christmas decorations in stores? They were actually putting Christmas trees up in department stores the last week in September, before we left for vacation. I like to see the decorations go up in November so I have plenty of time to enjoy them, but September is a little too soon. Maybe this happens every year and I've just never noticed before, but I think this is the first time I've seen grocery stores with the disgusting ghosts and monsters for Halloween on one aisle and then Christmas trees and wreaths on the next. Somehow that just seems strange to me. It really seems strange now that the weather is back up to eighty degrees to walk into stores and see snowy trees and and sleds. It just doesn't seem like the right time of year for Christmas decorations. It also reminds me a little too soon of all the Christmas shopping that's coming up and trying to figure out what the people on my list would like for a present.

Artwork

I managed to get a lot of artwork done while we were away. This was the first time I'd actually taken the trouble to pack up all my art supplies and bring them. I'm so glad I did because I managed to finish TWO 8x10 drawings last week. My art show is coming up at the beginning of November and I still have a lot of work to do. To be exact, I have at least five projects that I'd like to finish before then. So, finishing those two pictures was a big relief. One project that I want to do is a series of musical drawings. I've already photographed my dad's guitar, now I need to take some shots of the piano keys, and I'm hoping that my cousin Kristen will be able to photograph her flute for me and email the picture. If she can't, I can work with the guitar/piano theme. I also want to draw the picture of the bridge that I took when we went to the aquarium. I can't decide if I should make it large or small, though. The main problem now is that my camera charger is not working, so I can't take any pictures until I get a new one. The drawing of Princess above is one I finished this summer. I'll post pictures of my new drawings as soon as I can get my camera charged.

What Happened On Vacation

This trip was a lot more relaxed than the last one. We spent the first Sunday afternoon with my dad's side of the family to celebrate my grandma's 84th birthday. They had a nice dinner and we spent the afternoon looking at pictures from Lesley's wedding.

Thursday was really fun. Gabrielle's sixteenth birthday was in July during our last vacation. Even though we did take her out to eat and give her presents, we never did anything really special to celebrate because we were so busy. Our Aunt Sherry decided to throw a little surprise party for her. I met Aunt Sherry and my cousin Kristen at her office and we went to a town an hour away to go buy decorations and pick up her ice cream cake. The ice cream cake was the most important part. Gabrielle had specifically requested an ice cream cake for her birthday, but we forgot that they have to be ordered a few days in advance so she ended up with a flavor she didn't like as much. This time, we were going to make sure she got the cake she wanted. First, we went to the party supply store and picked out a bunch of Sweet Sixteen stuff, then stopped at the mall to buy her a present, then went to a store to pick up chips and candy, and then finally rushed to the ice cream parlour to get the cake. It was ready for us, decorated in her favorite color as requested, and they spelled her name right. Then we were worried that it would melt on the hour-long drive home so we rode all the way back with the air conditioner on freezing. As soon as we got back, Kristen and I started putting up decorations. Gabrielle had been at our Aunt Johnice's house all afternoon, so we called and told her we were ready. When Gabrielle walked in, she didn't even see the sweet sixteen banner on the doorway. She didn't even notice that Kati kept asking "What's that on the door?" over and over. When she finally looked over, this was her reaction:

She was totally surprised. She hadn't even suspected anything. And she loved the orange cake.

Friday night Aunt Sherry took Gabrielle and I to the mall, then to a movie and dinner. We spend a day doing fun stuff like that every time we visit. The next Sunday my mom cooked dinner for her side of the family and all my aunts, uncles and cousins -- twenty-six people altogether!-- came over. Yesterday we came back home. Thanksgiving is the next time we're supposed to travel back and it's not very far away.

Home Again!

We're back home at last! We spent practically all day travelling so now I'm completely exhausted. As soon as I got here, I unpacked both my suitcases and put everything back where it belonged so I wouldn't have to tomorrow. Now I can relax -- or start uploading and editing all the pictures I took while we were away. : )
